Gorman students tap entrepreneurial spirit to develop disaster relief idea

Excerpt: More than 1,400 student entrepreneurs set out to develop ideas that would have a global impact in a summer program held last year. This year, the ideas generated by those young entrepreneurs were judged by Verizon’s 2015 Powerful Answers Award contest. Katelyn Dunn, senior class president at Bishop Gorman High School, and her two peers, Margaux Giles and Karla Dana, took third place for their concept, Disaster Mesh, an air-deployable, wireless mesh network created for disaster relief. Read the full article, here.


Commentary by Debbie Lewis, Asteroid Day Expert Panel (ADXP):

There is real merit in this initiative in order to enhance the provision of humanitarian assistance in the aftermath of natural disasters, including of course asteroid impact events.

With the aid of this technological development it will be significantly more effective to use to identify the numbers of survivors, pinpoint their exact location and assess the extent of the injuries that have been sustained and in determining triage.  This will enable disaster relief organisations such as FEMA and the American Red Cross to direct resources to assist those most in need of medical assistance and aid.

We wish Katelyn Dunn, Margaux Giles and Karla Dana all the very best as they move forward with the design and development of this much needed and valuable resource and look forward to it progressing into a practicable product for use in all natural disasters.

Her dissertation was entitled, “Near-Earth Objects: Imminent Catastrophe or Manageable Risk?” The scope of the dissertation dealt with the risks, to Earth, posed by Near Earth Objects (NEO) along with the existing capabilities for tracking NEO in addition to risk communication and warning the public if an Earth strike is predicted.
